Nine Children’s of Alabama Programs Among Nation’s Elite
BIRMINGHAM – For the third consecutive year, Children’s of Alabama has been ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine.
Nine of Children’s pediatric specialty services were placed among the top 50 in the United States. The services included this year were Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery and Neurology, Pulmonology, Orthopedics and Urology. The complete listing and corresponding rankings may be found at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals and in the magazine’s August issue.
Children’s, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System and the UAB Departments of Pediatrics and Surgery collaborated to submit the requested information. Children’s, a private, not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of trustees, is the primary site of the UAB pediatric medicine, surgery, research and residency programs.
The ranking comes on the heels of Children’s dedicating its new Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children expansion on June 5. The 750,000 square-foot, $400 million expansion facility opens to patients in August and makes Children’s the third largest pediatric medical facility in the U.S.
“We are proud that nine of our programs were ranked among the nation’s best,” said Mike Warren, Children’s President and CEO. “More importantly, we are delighted to continue telling the Children’s of Alabama story at a national level. As important as the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children is and will be to families in our state, as amazing as the advanced technology is, as family-centered and child-focused as this entire campus is today, it all means nothing without the skills, knowledge and commitment of the caregivers who work here every day because it is our people that make these rankings possible and meaningful.”
The U.S. News and World Report Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are based on methodology that includes reputation, clinical outcome data and other care-related measures such as nursing care, surgical volume and credentialing. Hospitals are ranked, in part, on reputational scores based on survey responses from pediatric specialists from across the country.
Children’s is one of the 10 busiest pediatric medical facilities in the U.S. and the only hospital in the state dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services across its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional outpatient surgery and diagnostic imaging services provided at Children’s South and Children’s on 3rd. Primary care is provided at more than a dozen offices in communities across central and north Alabama. Children’s is one of just two hospitals in the state recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet-designated hospital for excellence in nursing care.
