Children’s of Alabama Expansion Leads to Need for New Telephone Prefix

BIRMINGHAM – Children’s of Alabama is launching a new dialing plan beginning Saturday, June 23. Changes will be made to the current plan to help standardize one prefix for all outside callers.

All Children’s telephone and fax numbers will begin with the new 638 prefix. This new prefix will replace current Children’s prefixes including 939, 212, 824 and 558. For example, the number 558.2947 would change to 638.2947.

The new prefix will be used on the Russell Campus which includes the McWane and Lowder Buildings, Dearth Tower, Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children, Park Place, Children’s Harbor and Children’s on 3rd, as well as Children’s South, offices at the Arlington Business Center and the Plaza and Magnolia Buildings. Phone numbers for all of Children’s offisite primary care practices, however, will remain the same.

“These changes not only incorporate the Russell Campus, but also further unite Children’s of Alabama as a healthcare system,” said Jack Storey, Children’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Children’s. “To add phones for the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children expansion, we would have been forced to introduce an additional prefix to the four we currently use, and obviously we thought this was a much better solution for those trying to reach our campus by telephone.”

Both the old and new telephone numbers will work for at least six months. For questions, contact Children’s Corporate Communications at 205-638-6660.
