BIRMINGHAM (April 1, 2013) – Medical Properties Trust will serve as Presenting Sponsor of the 2013 Racing for Children’s weekend to be held in conjunction with the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama April 5-7 at Barber Motorsports Park.
“Every child in Alabama benefits from the exceptional care and pioneering research that Children’s of Alabama provides,” said Edward K. Aldag, Jr., Medical Properties Trust Chairman, President and CEO. “MPT is delighted to be part of the outstanding Racing for Children’s team for the third year – racing to help kids beat cancer and other diseases.”
Recognized as the Official Charity of the Honda Indy Grand Prix, Racing for Children’s seeks to raise funds and awareness for The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders and has raised more than $300,000 to support pediatric cancer research and patient programs at Children’s of Alabama.
“Medical Properties Trust is just what the doctor ordered to ensure a great outcome for Racing for Children’s,” said Children’s CEO Mike Warren. “Ed Aldag and MPT stepped up the very first year to sponsor our first race car, and they stepped forward again last year to present the Children’s Patient Experience at the racetrack for patients and their families. It’s inspiring to see MPT deepening its commitment again by also sponsoring the Racing for Children’s charity auction/dinner on April 5th. It’s hard to imagine a more supportive partner than Medical Properties Trust, which is helping us raise significant dollars for pediatric oncology research – to win the most important race.”
Also partnering with Racing for Children’s this year is the legendary Brumos Porsche Racing Team – one of the most recognized and highly respected names in motorsports. Team owner A. Dano Davis, Motorsports Hall of Fame driver Hurley Haywood and the entire Brumos Racing team will be an integral part of Racing for Children’s – and Haywood will be the Guest of Honor at the charity auction.
The third annual Racing for Children’s Dinner and Charity Auction, sponsored by Medical Properites Trust, will be held on Friday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the beaufiful Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. Guests will gather to enjoy a champagne tasting courtesy of United Johnson Brothers, meet celebrity drivers and team members, and tour the museum’s famous collection of motorcycles before dinner is served at 7:30 p.m. After dinner, a live auction of a selection of high-end and one-of-a kind auction items will be conducted by C. King Benefit Auctions with all proceeds benefitting the hospital. Honored guests in addition to Haywood be Racing for Children’s Honorary Crew Chiefs Bayleigh Phillips and Emily Knerr, both of whom have been patients at Children’s.
On Saturday, Children’s patients and their families will be invited to share the trackside excitement with the drivers up close and personal as part of the MPT Racing for Children’s Patient Experience. Guests will enjoy behind-the-scenes paddock and transporter tours, participate in the Fan Walk of Pit Lane and have the opportunity to gather autographs from racing greats. Additionally, they will be on hand to cheer Brumos Racing’s #59 race car which will be driven by Andrew Davis and Leh Keen.
In addition to the famous #59, the car will carry the handprints of Children’s patients, as well as Children’s of Alabama and MPT logos, as it competes on behalf of Racing for Children’s in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series Porsche 250. Those wishing to support the Racing for Children’s effort may purchase corporate tables or tickets for the dinner and/or handprint sponsorships at www.racingforchildrens.org.
