Garland Stansell, APR
Chief Communications Officer
Garland Stansell has been with Children’s of Alabama since 1994. He has nearly 30 years experience in public relations, marketing and development. Previously, he served as Vice President of Development and Communications for Alabama Goodwill Industries and as Assistant Director of Corporate Communications for BancBoston Mortgage Corporation. Garland is a Birmingham native and received his B.A. in Mass Communications from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and a M.P.P.M. from Birmingham-Southern College. He earned his Accreditation in Public Relations in 2010 and has been active on a state and national level in the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) serving as Alabama PRSA chapter president, as a member of the executive committee of the national PRSA Health Academy and as chairman of the PRSA Health Academy. He currently serves on the PRSA National Board of Directors.
Adam Kelley, APR
Corporate Communications Manager
Adam has been with Children’s since 1997. Previously, he served as Public Relations and Marketing Manager for AAA-Alabama and as Sports Information Director at the University of Montevallo. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication from The University of Alabama in 1994 and his master’s in Education from Auburn University in 1996. As a student, Adam worked in media relations for both schools’ athletic departments and also wrote for several state newspapers and magazines. He has been a member of the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) and SPRF-member Public Relations Council of Alabama since 1999 and earned his Accreditation in Public Relations in 2004.
A native of Huntsville, Al, Amy earned her B.A. in Communication and Information Sciences from The University of Alabama. While at the university she was a member of the Ad Team and Kappa Tau Alpha National Honor Society for Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to joining Children’s in 2002, she worked at the state’s largest Internet Service Provider as an Advertising Coordinator. Her work in television and outdoor advertising garnered three Addy awards. An avid writer, Amy has also written for several entertainment blogs. At Children’s, she manages all social and digital media efforts.
Media Relations Coordinator
A Birmingham native, Cassandra earned her B.A. and M.A. in Communication and Information Sciences from The University of Alabama, where she was a staff reporter for The Crimson White and a 2008 Knight Community Journalism Fellow. Before joining the Children’s Media Relations team in 2015, she was a designer and copy editor for Alabama Media Group, editor-in-chief of Hoover’s Magazine, associate editor of the Shelby County Reporter and staff reporter at The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. Her work has garnered awards from the Alabama Press Association, the Mississippi Press Association and Associated Press Media Editors.
Media Relations and Physician Marketing Coordinator
A native of Huntsville, Ala., Leighton earned her B.A. in Public Relations from Auburn University. She has been with Children’s since 2012 and joined the Media Relations team, along with the Physician Marketing team, in 2015. Leighton has served on the board for the Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, currently serves on the junior board for Grace House Ministries and is a member of the Rotaract Club of Birmingham.
